What’s this site about? Models I’ve come across and wanted to share (often out of mental vertigo), but sometimes just out of fascination or mere general interest.
The world does not fit in our brain (or our computers) so to think about anything, e.g., a tree, our marriage, the stock market, God, or the meaning of life, we have to make a model in our head.
As I stumble around the web and the bookstore, I come up thinks which amuse or fascinate. I just thought I would make some comments on them. Although I use some models for my daily thinking, lots of them just ones I’ve come across and found them unique or different from the way I categorized the world.
Other notes on model-based thinking:
- Model Predetermination: Models have their own internal logic which lead our thoughts and investigations down a set of paths. The models we select ‘predetermine’ or heavily bias the decision/views we will take and thus ultimately our actions.
- Model Promiscuity: Our mind uses lots of different models depending on our what we desire for the outcome of our actions, e.g. we think about a tree differently when we to create a garden versus when we want it use its wood for ceiling beams. Model promiscuity is the key to flexibility.
- Model Fixation: People get confused and think that the model is their head is that model object, that is, is the one, true, and unique model for the external object. This often leads to non-optimal behavior toward others who carry different models in their heads.
